Paul Demakes' wife, April, turned up at the Illustrator's opening at #301 after classes in full Piratical gear. The exhibit's wallgraphics seem directly connected to their story-book looks.

Pirate Day throughout the school...

"PIRATE DAY" on April 7th...students assume piratical attidudes (some -by NOT dressing up?) all day; and Narrative Figure Class meets outside on the Beverly Common to draw Daniel in some classic poses. Passers-by of all ages, walking or driving, respond with "Aaaghhh!".

This gown is made with layers of sheer silk 'voile' fabric shirred and draped over a cream silk base, and strongly structured with 'boning' in the post-WWII "new-look" style, by Christian Dior.

The cumberbund waist drape is in Duchesse Satin. The hips are actually padded out to emphasize an 'hour-glass' shape, and the back skirt is layered in an up-dated version of the Victorian bustle. Because it's Couture, all this structure and fabric weighs very little, and is easy to wear. The skirt-length is called,"Ballerina-Length" and was appropriate for evening Dinners and Dances...but not formal ENOUGH for "white-tie" or full-dress Balls, in those days. The model has her hair correctly done as a tight, small, smooth head, to balance all that 'fluff'.

Here at last is our little blog of collected photos from various sessions with Costumed Models.

NOTA BENE!! WEDNESDAY WAS "PIRATE DAY", with Daniel, who does a fierce Pirate. We invited Everyone at school to wear Piratical gear ALL DAY, and maybe jump up onto the model stand during class to be with Daniel, get photographed or be 'drawn into the spirit' of the day...

PRIZES Were handed out to many pirates and wenches seen roaming the hallways, classes, offices, parking lots...that proclaimed the Pirate Ways. We even had a pirate song sung to us in Survey of Illustration class. Next week we're covering the art and biographies of the great Adventure illustrators of the early 20th century; the Originator of our very ideas of how Pirates looked...Howard Pyle, and his most famous student, N.C.Wyeth, among others.

We held the Narrative Figure class outdoors in 80 degree heat on The Common, with cars and bikes whoshing by and hollering piratically companionable stuff, while George Thompson waxed forth in the Gazebo beside us about the Tao of Art, and Judy Brown's painting class worked nearby.
